Neighborhood

Newberg is a Willamette Valley Jewel

Nestled in the rolling hills of the Willamette Valley’s wine country, Newberg offers a slice of history, a dash of natural beauty, and of course, a sip of delicious wine. With its wide selection of parks and coffee shops, Newberg sits tucked away from the hustle of the city while still only a 30-minute drive from downtown Portland.

With the Pacific Coast an hour in one direction and Mount Hood an hour in the other, there are tons of options for exciting day trips right in Newberg’s backyard. And if you’re sticking around town, a population of about 23,000 means Newberg maintains its cozy small-town feel with a ton of amenities to enjoy. Whether you’re visiting for a weekend or settling in to raise a family, Newberg has a lot to offer.

Wine and Dine

The majority of the Willamette Valley’s over-200 wineries are scattered throughout Yamhill County, which makes Newberg an excellent base to discover the best of what the region can offer. Nearby McMinnville may be larger and better-known, but Newberg boasts a selection that will leave no wine-taster wanting.

The history of modern wineries in the Newberg area started in 1963, with Chehalem Mountain Vineyards. The Chehalem Mountains American Viticultural Area is renowned for its delicious Pinot Noirs, but those who prefer a lighter wine palate won’t be disappointed. Check out Tresori Vineyards for a wine-tasting experience in a restored barn with a beautiful stone fireplace. REX Hill is one of the most popular wineries in the area for good reason, offering a 30-year legacy of elegant pinot noirs and a variety of tasting experiences.

And while wine-making may not be an exact science, David Bellows proves that having a degree in rocket science sure doesn’t hurt. A NASA retiree-turned vintner, Bellows produces all his wine on-site at the beautiful VIDON Vineyard, complete with a gorgeous patio with views of the lovely Dundee Hills. For a more active experience, spend an afternoon on an electric bicycle tour of Newberg-Dundee wineries to admire the area’s natural beauty and capture some great memories (and pictures).

Out On The Town

There’s no need to wander the countryside in search of good food and drink, as appealing as the options there may be. If you’re looking to dine in the ambiance of a beautiful Victorian home, downtown Newberg has options. Check out The Painted Lady for lavish French-inspired American cuisine, or Recipe for a la carte fine dining and the “best patio in all of Newberg.”

In terms of entertainment, when you’re done sipping wine and rambling across the picturesque hills, stop by the 99-W drive-in movie theater for an old-school movie experience. Newberg also boasts a nationally-renowned skate park with 29,000 square feet of concrete right beside a BMX track for those who prefer leisure activities that get the blood pumping. Being on the outskirts of the Portland metro area also makes Newburg a great jumping-off point for a trip to the coast. Dodge the city traffic on the way to the Pacific in an easy day-trip jaunt.

A Storied History

Vineyards aren’t the only deep roots in Newberg’s soil. Given its name in 1869 and incorporated as a town in 1889, Newberg cherishes its history. Several historical buildings sit in its downtown area, complete with informational plaques thanks to the Newberg Area Historical Society. Stroll on a self-guided walking tour of historic buildings such as the Carnegie Library to wind down after a whirlwind tour of local wineries, especially with a cup of joe from the Coffee Cottage. Be sure to check out the Chehalem Cultural Center with its fine arts gallery and studio space, which is also located in a historic building.

Newberg also hosts the campus of George Fox University, a historical Christian college with Quaker roots stretching back 125 years. With recent graduating classes averaging about 4,000 students, the small college is a staple of Newberg’s rich history and community. Stationed on 108 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds, George Fox’s beautiful campus is just one more reason Newberg enjoys such a vibrant community.

Enjoy The Great Outdoors

The Newberg area sports a large number of trails, parks, and recreation sites, with a comprehensive list at the Chehalem Park and Recreation District’s website. Even central Newberg itself offers seven urban trails winding around the town’s cultural attractions. Less than a mile from the main drag, the Ewing Young Park offers a myriad of opportunities to get outdoors, whether you’re visiting the skate park or taking the dog for a run.

The lovely Champoeg State Heritage Park is the perfect place to soak in some natural beauty and comes highly recommended. Tripadvisor rates it as the number one attraction in the Newberg area. The park offers camping, picnic areas, beautiful meadows, and frisbee golf courses. Walk by the Willamette River and reflect on the quiet beauty of the area, as well as its rich history.

A Look at the Newberg Rental Market

Those looking to rent in Newberg may face a competitive market, as it’s more common for Newberg residents to own their homes rather than rent them. 64 percent of residents own according to Niche.com, which also describes the area’s feel as “dense suburban.” A 2019 study by Safe Home rated Newberg as the second-safest city in all of Oregon, making it a wonderful place for families. The majority of homes are single-family three-bedroom units, so there are lots of options for people wanting to spread out. With its numerous green spaces and attractive amenities, Newberg is a popular place to settle down.
